Sunscreen's part 3, the hybrid

Yikes! Let's prevent the burn!
Sometimes a marriage of two things creates the best outcome- in this case, it's a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen that will protect your skin on every level.

I think the real selling point for a combined physical and chemical sunscreen-in-one is about texture. Oftentimes a physical sunscreen can be a little heavy so if it's paired with a translucent chemical sunscreen, it cuts down on the chalkiness, and you still get a maximum amount of protection.

So, here are my combined sunscreen recommendations:

For the FACE:
Kiss my Face // elta MD // Shiseido // Algenist
For the BODY:
BabyGanics // Dr. Dennis Gross // Jack Black // CeraVe
When looking for a combined physical and chemical sunscreen, don't assume that if you look at one bottle from a particular brand then they'll all be that kind. Most sunscreen brands offer a variety of physical, chemical and combined options... basically you need to read all the labels in order to figure it all out.

Do you have any favorite sunscreens? Were these sunscreen posts insightful and clear? I'd love to hear what you think.

  2. Fantastic series of posts! Any pregnancy or breast feeding suggestions? I recently tried a sample of the Shiseido 50 Face/Body and loved the easy application, texture and the way it felt on my face. Is the Shiseido 42 Urban Face similar in texture? I love the hybrid idea because I want all-hands-on-deck protection!

And as a complete aside, can you recommend a mineral foundation brush? I use Bare Minerals. My current brush is shedding and it just generally feels pokey on my poor little face.

    1. The Shiseido SPF 42 Urban Face is wonderful for everyday use, but since the minerals are so miconized (aka, broken down) they won't stand up to a hot beach day. For "laying out" I'd recommend you stick with the Face/Body SPF 50.
      - As far as a mineral foundation brush goes, I'd try this one from Sephora (It's really popular and feels great too):
